Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the school located?

We are still in the planning and fundraising phase, and no location has been selected yet. For the first 1-2 years, we plan to lease 1400-2000 square feet of office space, ideally in downtown Vancouver, Washington.

Key factors in choosing a location include

  • nearby access to the library
  • proximity to local businesses
  • Walkable outdoor spaces
  • Clark College for Running Start easily accessable
  • acccess to public transportation

As the school grows and is financial sustainable, we plan to identify a new location that can accommodate up to 60 students and staff.

What is the tuition?

Our goal is to keep Montessori education affordable in and around Vancouver. Currently, we are considering tuition rates between $1,350 and $1,400 per month, which equates to an annual rate of $16,200 to $16,800.

Will there be financial aid options available?

At this time, we do not plan to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. While IB is a rigorous college preparation program, AtlasMHS prioritizes individualized, lifelong learning over intensive testing.

How can AtlasMHS ensure my child won’t be at a disadvantage when applying to college compared to other high schools or private schools?

The AtlasMHS curriculum will meet all state and federal standards. We will work closely with the guide, student, and family to ensure that each student meets AtlasMHS graduation requirements, which align with Washington state standards. Montessori students are often well-prepared for college and adult life, demonstrating greater confidence, curiosity, and adaptability compared to those from traditional educational backgrounds.

What foreign language courses does AtlasMHS plan to offer to fulfill high school foreign language requirements?

AtlasMHS will offer foreign language courses through various methods, including online or app-based platforms, virtual meetings with native speakers, or attending in-person classes at another school or campus. This flexible approach allows students to choose the language they are most interested in, rather than being limited to one or two options, while still meeting high school language requirements.

What are AtlasMHS's plans for Art courses?

Art may be offered as an elective, depending on student interest and potential partnerships with local artistic businesses. To provide greater flexibility, students may take their art electives—such as music or drama classes—off campus if needed. Art course offerings will rotate by trimester. For example, one trimester might offer a course on 20th-century music and its connections to societal and political changes, incorporating research and language arts work to deepen the learning experience. Choices will evolve based on student interests and available resources.

How will health education and physical education credits be handled at AtlasMHS?

AtlasMHS students will complete at least one health education course and two physical education courses. Health education will be taught on campus by the guide(s) and will cover topics such as mental health, sexual health, relationships, family dynamics, and physical well-being. PE credits can be earned through the student’s choice of physical activity, which may take place either on campus or at an outside facility.

Other options we will explore, depending on student interest, include partnering with local fitness businesses, such as yoga studios or personal trainers.

Will AtlasMHS offer Special Education (IEP) services?

Any special education requirements should be discussed during the application process to determine if AtlasMHS can accommodate them. The Montessori environment is known to be particularly supportive for students with dyslexia, anxiety, autism, and other neurodivergent needs. WA state has some IEP support and personnel to identify  and review individualized student plans.

Will AtlasMHS intertwine core subjects and electives?

Yes, AtlasMHS will use an interdisciplinary curriculum, allowing core subjects to often overlap in the classroom. Electives may also be integrated into discussions and activities related to core subjects, enabling students to explore various disciplines and trades as they learn.
